One Piece Chapter 1078 Raises the Stakes with a Complicating Twist

It was discovered that the traitor among the Vegapunks is someone who plays a major role with them. This makes it hard to confront the Vegapunks.

The following article contains spoilers from One Piece Chapter 1078, “Escape Limit,” written by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone. The book is available in English from Viz Media.

The most important event in One Piece Chapter 1078, “Escape Limit ” The most significant event was the discovery of York the Greedy as the traitor among the Vegapunks. It turns out it’s been York the Greedy setting things up on Egghead over the last three months. This is made difficult by the fact that she’s involved more than the other Vegapunk, not even Stella.

If it were any other Vegapunk, the answer might have been simple. The Straw Hats could either let them be a part of their fate or even kill them. This may be similar to how Kanjuro Kurozumi was handled. Since most of the Vegapunks focus on analyzing and gathering data, it won’t be a major loss should something happen to one of them. York is a key player in the Satellites.

York is not responsible for analyzing or gathering data. York is instead responsible to perform all important bodily functions like eating and sleeping. York is the source of energy for the other Vegapunks to complete their tasks. If anything occurs to her and she can’t fulfill her duties, the Satellites who depend on her might keel over from exhaustion or hunger.

The other Satellites may be able to eat and sleep on their own, but it isn’t confirmed. It could be a challenge for those without human anatomy. Robotic satellites like Pythagoras or Edison may need someone else to eat their food. Even if they eliminate York, Lilith or Atlas may still require enough for them both as well as Shaka.

The original plan does not alter if York is needed by the satellites. All seven Vegapunks from Egghead will be taken by the Straw Hats on their way to the next destination. They’ll have to now be the Greedy prisoner instead of their guest.

Of course, all of this depends on the ultimate destiny of Pythagoras and Shaka. Both appear to have been murdered, but One Piece fans are used to rethinking deaths and expecting a fake-out. York can get a second chance if they’re both alive or can be saved. If they’re not able to save York, she can be considered to be an unredeemable monster and given the consequences that await it.

It’s unclear what will happen to York now that she has been accused of being a traitor. Or, she could be taken to the Thousand Sunny as a prisoner or taken into the custody of The World Government. Or, she could be killed. Based on the importance of her job the latter option may not be preferable.
