Fans first caught a glimpse of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s Princess Peach using the Fire Flower in the trailer, which dropped back in November. While the iconic power-up has been at Mario and Luigi’s side since the game Super Mario Bros. launched on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, the upcoming animated film is the only time Peach has utilized the Fire Flower in an official Marioproject. Super Mario 3D World is the first and only video game where Peach can use the Fire Flower. It was released on the Wii U in 2013 before being ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2021.

Much like how the Fire Flower has always provided characters such as Mario and Luigi a palette swap, when Peach gets the power-up in Super Mario 3D World her pink dress transforms into a white and red one, just like the version seen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The “Fire Peach” is not the only alternative outfit that is what the Mushroom King ruler wears in the animated film. The official trailer also showcases a battle-ready Peach wearing the pink and white racing outfit she wears when driving a motorcycle in the racing game Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8.

Hovarth also cited the previously mentioned Super Mario 3D World as having influenced the film’s depiction of Princess Peach as she is presented as an individual hero in her own right. “She’s the monarch who leads this kingdom of hapless, adorable Toads,” the co-director stated. “We were thinking how strong that person would need to be to defend these people. This was the basis of Peach’s character in our movie.”
